Tuesday, August 26, 2003 :::
Today I read a wonderful piece about a 47-year-old man who, totally blind since the age of 3, had his sight partially restored via pioneering stem-cell surgery. The piece was formed of extracts from his diary written between 2000, when he received treatment, and summer this year. It was inspirational on many different levels to read in his words how adjusting to sight has affected his life, and the almost child-like wonder with which he describes his new-found visual experience is as thought-provoking as it is charming. On some level I deeply envy the man; who else in middle age suddenly gets the chance to experience the world in a whole new way? Perhaps if we all took a moment to look around us with new eyes, to try and find a fresh way of viewing the familiar, we'd all be alot happier. I'm going to try and spend a few minutes each day doing just that, and see what happens.
I would have liked to have started with a viewing of Mars, now at it's closest to Earth for 60,000 years, but in a typical display of petulance the British weather has decided to take a turn, and these funny fluffy white things have come along and filled up the sky, blocking out the sun and the stars. Oh well, there are a few days yet, so perhaps I'll get lucky and the clouds will break.
Ben Folds has been gracing stereos chez-Chips this weekend. And the new Dashboard COnfessional album, not as good as the debut, but still mighty fine.
